Com cada vez mais pl\u00e1stico acumulado em lixeiras ou no oceano, torna-se critico encontrar uma forma de lidar com ele. Existe uma nova tecnologia que parece permitir n\u00e3o s\u00f3 tratar estes res\u00edduos, como tamb\u00e9m transform\u00e1-los em algo \u00fatil.<\/p>\n<p>Investigadores do Departamento de Qu\u00edmica da Universidade de Oxford, em colabora\u00e7\u00e3o com outros grupos e institui\u00e7\u00f5es, desenvolveram uma promissora tecnologia que permite converter res\u00edduos pl\u00e1sticos de uso quotidiano em g\u00e1s de hidrog\u00e9nio, que pode subsequentemente ser usado como um combust\u00edvel.<\/p>\n<p>Para isto utiliza-se um m\u00e9todo de cat\u00e1lise pelo qual micropart\u00edculas met\u00e1licas, mais concretamente de \u00f3xido de ferro e \u00f3xido de alum\u00ednio, s\u00e3o ativadas e aquecidas por micro-ondas, levando \u00e0 extra\u00e7\u00e3o de cerca de 97% do hidrog\u00e9nio presente no pl\u00e1stico. Utilizando o conceito de <em>Size-Induced Metal to Insulator Transition <\/em>(SIMIT), ao diminuir o tamanho de uma part\u00edcula met\u00e1lica abaixo dum tamanho critico, \u00e9 poss\u00edvel baixar a condutividade de um metal e aumentar a sua absor\u00e7\u00e3o de micro-ondas por v\u00e1rias ordens de grandeza.
