Na \u00faltima d\u00e9cada, o uso de sistemas de edi\u00e7\u00e3o gen\u00e9tica baseados em CRISPR teve um forte impacto no trabalho de bi\u00f3logos e bioengenheiros em todo o mundo, valendo at\u00e9 um pr\u00e9mio Nobel a Emmanuelle Charpentier e Jennifer Doudna em 2020. Isto porque, ao contr\u00e1rio de ferramentas anteriores, estes permitem a edi\u00e7\u00e3o precisa e relativamente simples de sequ\u00eancias concretas do genoma de diversas esp\u00e9cies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:284,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:312}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assim, para al\u00e9m de novos estudos de fun\u00e7\u00e3o gen\u00e9tica, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00e9 poss\u00edvel usar ferramentas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> CRISPR para editar genes concretos de esp\u00e9cies de interesse agr\u00edcola \u2013 sem inserir ou eliminar sequ\u00eancias longas em locais mal definidos, como acontece com os organismos geneticamente modificados tradicionais (GMOs). Estas edi\u00e7\u00f5es podem conferir vantagens substanciais no seu rendimento, atrav\u00e9s de melhorias na resist\u00eancia a doen\u00e7as ou fatores de stress. Por outro lado, na Uni\u00e3o Europeia, s\u00e3o equiparadas aos GMOs tradicionais, exigindo grandes estudos de campo que podem fazer o processo de aprova\u00e7\u00e3o levar d\u00e9cadas. A estrutura regulamentar chinesa \u2013 antes id\u00eantica \u00e0 europeia \u2013 passa, desde dia 21 de janeiro, a classificar separadamente os organismos editados por CRISPR. Assim, a aprova\u00e7\u00e3o destes requer ensaios mais simples, face ao seu menor risco ambiental.<\/p><p>Este tipo de altera\u00e7\u00e3o regulamentar pode vir a tornar poss\u00edvel o desenvolvimento de culturas agr\u00edcolas mais rent\u00e1veis e, simultaneamente, sustent\u00e1veis. No entanto, como em qualquer tecnologia recente, h\u00e1 ainda um grau elevado de desconhecimento e incerteza social, que exige cautela regulamentar adicional (refletida na classifica\u00e7\u00e3o europeia).
